Premiere: Sweet Whirl - 'Strange News'

Image
Melbourne project that has a gentle sense of grace... Sweet Whirl is a new project from Esther Edquist, a figure who has worked with a number of different musicians in her native Australia. Based in Melbourne, Sweet Whirl has a bittersweet countrified touch, with her folk-hewn side matched by some dreamy electric guitar. Working with Chapter Music on her next release, incoming EP 'Love Songs & Poetry' is set to drop on May 3rd - pre-order HERE . New song 'Strange News' leads the way, and it finds Sweet Whirl exhibiting a gentle sense of grace, an unhurried sense of beauty. There's a slight late evening feel, a drowsiness combined with a relaxed longing. Esther says: "This song is like a warm inebriation, it's about wooing, trying to woo, trying to hold onto a vibe as it slips through your fingers, out of your reach, coo-cooing it back to you, hanging for a kiss..." Night House Espouse Minimalism On 'Unfold'

Image
Brighton project meditate on lost friendships... Night House have a hushed tone; quiet but exact, their every move is precise, it's just that they don't make a lot of moves. Need more convincing? Well, the Brighton project will release new single 'Unfold' on March 1st, and it's a wonderful example of their restrained songwriting. Hushed tones interlocking with sedate elements of electronics, reference points could include everyone from Bon Iver to James Blake, alongside Brian Eno's more ambient works. Written to soothe the heartbreak of a close friend, there's a meditative quality, a feeling of drifting through moods before reaching resolution. Night House comment: "'Unfold' focuses on the moments of change in relationship that is breaking down. The track was written for a close after his breakup with his boyfriend. I wrote 'Unfold' as an attempt to comfort my friend that this pain, however hard, in time will pass....

Premiere: Swimming Bell - '1988'

Image
Dappled, pastoral folk songwriting with a left field thirst... It all started when Katie Schottland broke her foot. Spending a lot of time indoors recuperating, she started to pay more attention to her acoustic guitar, becoming absorbed in its universe of possibilities. Drafting her own take on folk's more progressive wing, a debut EP under the moniker Swimming Bell  followed and it thrust the Brooklyn singer into the spotlight. Lush, Laurel Canyon scenes given a 21st century makeover, her gorgeous songwriting was equipped with a thirst for the left field. Debut album 'Wild Sight' lands on April 5th, and it finds Swimming Bell spreading her wings ever further. We're able to share dreamy new cut '1988' and it's opaque sonics turn translucent under the beaming light of Katie Schottland's vocals. A new video has been shot for the track, and we're delighted to be able to share it before anyone else. Tune in now. Join us on  Vero , a...

The Japanese House - Good At Falling

Image
A masterful debut from the enigmatic superstar-in-waiting... Beginning as a collection of demos recorded in Amber Bain’s bedroom, these stories of her recent breakup appear as tales straight from her diary as everything is laid bare. It’s a personal and vulnerable set of stories but the confident delivery and purring pop rushes see the melancholic messages act as an invitation to dance. Lifelong influences like The Beach Boys, Bon Iver and James Blake are clear throughout, Amber Bain’s harmonies and sampling methods, a constant feature of The Japanese House sound, are executed perfectly here. Meanwhile the song structuring, something Bain has always focused on, is clear and distinct. The verses offering a coherent narrative, the choruses acting as an opportunity for Amber to release any remaining pain, angst or energies atop of synth-rushes and pop hooks. The pulsating opener, ‘Went To Meet Her’, creates an eerie, mysterious feel but darkness soon morphs into light as ...

Track Of The Day 28/2 - Hobby Club

Image
'Bedroom' Manchester duo Hobby Club seem to interlock perfectly. The kind of disarmingly charming indie pop the city has long since made its own, their literate, off piste songwriting has a deeply idiosyncratic feel. Incoming project 'Video Days' EP is due via Heist Or Hit on March 8th, recorded in an ex shipyard canteen. There's a touching DIY quality to the sound, something that simply makes Hobby Club rather more endearing, like a bright sunny day reflected in a damp pavement puddle. New cut 'Bedroom' is a case in point - on the surface it's pastoral jangle pop recalls Real Estate or Swimming Tapes, while lyrically lies something darker. Singer Beth Truscott explains that the song is about heartbreak “turning you from a reasonable human being into a crumpled heap of gelatinous matter and tears, incapable of making a phone call or keeping track of your personal effects.” The upbeat melody serves a further purpose - it shadows an att...

Kristina Bazan Shares New Acoustic Version Of 'The Devil'

Image
A beautiful live recording... Kristina Bazan has devoted herself to forging connections. Someone who thrives on meeting others, she's conjured this community around her interests and passions which almost has an independent life of its own. Steeped in fashion but interested in literate, music, and performance, her songwriting taps into each of these worlds and more. Upcoming album 'Honey & Venom' is a work of real depth, with Kristina's supple vocal delivery set against some astute songwriting. Album highlight 'The Devil' is a real fan favourite, but we've managed to nab this extremely intimate acoustic rendering. Just Kristina Bazan's voice and a guitar, it's a beautiful performance, charming, soothing, and delightful. Tune in now. Join us on  Vero , as we get under the skin of global cultural happenings. Premiere: Kyoto Love Hotel - 'Shapes That Bond You'

Image
Frosted synth pop from the rising Irish duo... It's a long to Tipperary, or so they say, but it's not if you live there . Because you're already there. Irish two-piece Kyoto Love Hotel hail from Tipperary, and their frosted synth pop melds the future with the personal, a kind of icy electro-scape transformed into a mood board. Causing a stir over the Irish Sea with their opening flurry of release, the duo - Joe Geaney (Floating Ballroom) and Laura Sheary (formerly of Staring at Lakes) - are ready to try something new. Brooding but emphatic new single 'Shapes That Bond You' unfurls at its own glacial pace, the undulating synths retaining that jagged analogue quality while removing any lingering warmth. Sub zero songwriting with a pop appetite, 'Shapes That Bond You' reminds Clash of those early Ladytron cuts, and that's no bad thing - artful, tech-informed, and glamorous in a rather decadent way, we're pretty smitten with this bunch....

Alex Kozobolis Entrances On New Piece 'Barcelona'

Image
It's a cyclical, soothing piano piece... Alex Kozobolis has never viewed music purely as sound. Rather, he envisages music as both an arrival point and a departure, a means to collate memories, to work through emotions. It's little wonder that there's a therapeutic, meditative quality to his work - it is in every sense therapy, a method of transcending situations in his life. New album 'Somewhere Else' arrives on April 26th, matching modern classical developments against a lingering interest in jazz. Piano is the main instrument, the tool of composition, with Alex Kozobolis' cyclical, soothing techniques combining on something rather magical. Sitting somewhere between the formal and the improvisatory, new piece 'Barcelona' aims “to raise questions rather than to give answers”. Keeping its mystery to the last, it's a fascinating, prettily enchanting piano excursion. Tune in now. Photo Credit: Özge Cöne Join us on  Vero , as we...

Live Report: The Lemon Twigs - Roundhouse, London

Image
Don't try this at home, kids... Before I start to talk about ‘The Twigs’ (as no-one calls them), it’s worth mentioning support act Matt Maltese, who’s unassuming yet brilliant set reminded me of Rufus Wainwright in his prime… check him out when you have a chance. You would expect the ‘unassuming’ theme to lift with the Lemon Twigs , due to, and I guess I mean this in a kind way, the way they look – as if, having realised that they’re running late for the gig, they’ve careered through a Shoreditch vintage shop and grabbed what they could. In the dark. This seemed to be a waste of time for the drummer anyway, as his top was off by about three songs in… he should have worn some trackie bottoms… much more comfortable. The stage set is kept simple – no unfurling of a band logo, no confetti cannons a la Flaming Lips… maybe the always stirring surroundings of the Roundhouse (plus the lead’s haircuts and 9% body fat) were deemed enough of an attraction. It almost reminded me...

Weezer - Weezer (The Black Album)

Image
Confused, cringingly uncomfortable and desperately out of touch... On the back of the fan requested viral cover of Toto’s ‘Africa’ comes ‘The Black Album’ from the band who fashioned some of the biggest adolescent American movie soundtrack hits of the 90’s. It is the fifth installment in a succession of colour-coded albums from the quirky Californian quintet, and perhaps it should be their last if this is the direction they are intent on pursuing. Following an unconventional writing process and working with Dave Sitek of New York art-rockers TV On The Radio, frontman Rivers Cuomo put the band on a new trajectory with a more sonically diverse sound. It was a bold move for the quintessential band of the 90s, who’s timeless teen tunes have been firmly rooted in hooky garage guitar pop. You cannot fault a man for trying, but unfortunately their risky strategy resulted in far more misses than hits with this one. The lyrical content throughout is as equally eclectic as the...

Are You 'Into This'? Well, Get Into Martha

Image
Check out their new DIY blaster... Martha have shared the wry, humorous video to their new DIY blaster 'Into This'. The band's new album 'Love Keeps Kicking' arrives on April 5th, with the record said to trace the path of heartbreak. A kind of un-traditional break up record, the new LP moves through the various stages of grief and loss, but in true Martha style does so with a sense of playful wit and irony. Take new single 'Into This'. Online now, it comes equipped with a resolutely DIY video that even finds time for a spot of interpretative dance from Jimmy Cleveland. Of the video, the band say: "Hi friends, here's another new single! A Place To Bury Strangers Pick The Loudest Guitar Albums (Ever)

Image
Feast on a hand-picked selection of all out noise... A Place To Bury Strangers have long since turned noise into an art form. The band's unrelenting live shows are a feast of volume driven feedback, a blast of disorienting guitar effects transported to another dimension. The noise rock godheads recently recorded a full session for Fuzz Club Records, and it gained a full release earlier in the month. With the needle rarely leaving the red it's a bracing, thrilling, exhilarating experience, with tracks picked from throughout their catalogue. Francis Lung Goes On A Journey With 'I Wanna Live In My Dreams'

Image
New London show announced... Those of you with long memories might well remember WU LYF , the outrageous, ramshackle, forever inspired Manchester group. Well, Francis Lung was a key part of that, and his solo endeavours continue the spirit - but perhaps not the sound - of that project. Matching bubblegum melodies to song structures hewn from some parallel universe, the songwriter has hitched up his flag with Memphis Industries. Launching the partnership with a strange, beguiling new solo pearl, 'I Wanna Live In My Dreams' is a wistful, endlessly endearing solo endeavour. Pond Trace Their Sonic Influences

Image
From OutKast to Brian Eno... Pond are this unstoppable creative force. Still rooted in Perth, Western Australia, the band's lengthy catalogue moves from lysergic psychedelic to all-out rock via wonky pop moments and even flecks of hip-hop production. New album 'Tasmania' concerns itself with the tangled history of Australia, pitting ideas of colonial legacy against a broader concern for the environment and fears of a coming apocalypse. It's not all Imperial foreboding, however; 'Tasmania' contains some of Pond's most explicitly pop moments, shards of stark coherency set against sonic playfulness. Clash catches up with Pond singer and creative force Nick Allbrook to discuss their aural influences... - - - OutKast - 'Pink And Blue' One of the greatest albums of all time. This sort of floating space funk, that perfectly marries fantasy, pathos, humour, sadness and euphoria, is one of the great inspirations for me. The way the bass...

Listen: EUT - 'Crack The Password'

Taut indie rock from Amsterdam... Amsterdam group EUT have shared their taut new indie rocker 'Crack The Password' - tune in now. The group formed at art school, with their initial rehearsals taking place at ad hoc parties and backroom venues across the city. Debut album 'Fool For The Vibes' was given a Dutch release last year, and it's off piste indie rock thrills caused a stir in their homeland. Part of a wave of groups from the Netherlands gaining traction across Europe, EUT will give their debut LP a full British release shortly. Singer Megan de Klerk comments: “At the beginning, we just wanted to make nice songs and have fun. But now we really feel like there's so much more left for us to see and to conquer.” New song 'Crack The Password' leads the way, a thumping piece of askew garage punk with a killer chorus and some brooding, ultra-cool vocals. Joe Hertz Drops Juicy R&B Burner 'MØØn'

Image
Nonô takes the sultry lead vocal... Joe Hertz pairs with vocalist Nonô on juicy R&B burner 'MØØn'. The producer seems to put himself to the test with each release, broadening his scope while enhancing his sound. Rising vocalist Nonô spars with the beat maker on new single 'MØØn' with those squelching R&B sounds making for a party favourite. The two seem to be kindred spirits, lifting the single to the next level, both in its assured production and those languid, enveloping vocals. Joe explains... “This song came from my first session with Nonô - we quickly found we shared a lot of the same cultural influences and both had this passion for looking at where we are all going, as society, and as artists. We liked the idea of a message of female empowerment through a visual story for this one: 'I’m flying to the moon’ - anything is possible and this felt in line with Nonô’s own story pursuing her music and life in London from Brazil.” “On the...

"It was sort of the wake up call..." JAWS have shared their brooding, amorphous new song 'FEAR' - tune in now. The precocious riser is signed to 4AD, who released her debut album 'The Age Of Anxieties' back in 2017. PIXX explains: "This song is about growing up in an ultra-conservative Catholic school which was restrictive and oppressive. I think this is a lack of humanity in the way the system works, rather than teaching empathy and kindness it forces people into a dangerous self-loathing cycle. This is an ode to anyone trapped in a place they feel they don't belong." T...
