Lauran Hibberd Indulges Her Twisted Sense Of Humour On 'Sugardaddy'

Image
It's a biting return from the Isle of Wight newcomer... Lauran Hibberd means business. Amassing a stockpile of material and a snappy live show, the Isle of Wight newcomer is ready to make 2019 her own. Set to support indie heroes Hippo Campus on their incoming UK tour, she's also prepping some new releases. Opening her account for the year in fine style, Lauran Hibberd indulges her twisted sense of humour on biting new indie jammer 'Sugardaddy'. All playful lyrics and that driving, absorbing riff, she says "it’s like wrapping bubblegum around depression..." Lauran comments: “There’s a million love songs, but my dream is to live in a world where there’s a million songs about stuff like wanting a sugar daddy. I guess it’s a joke, it’s like wrapping bubblegum around depression.” “The idea stemmed from life being life, I have sort of a twisted humour so at some point my brain came to this as a comical solution. I wrote this track with Boe Weave...

Black Midi Sign To Rough Trade, Share New 'Speedway' EP

Image
Check it out now... Until a few months ago the only we you could absorb Black Midi was through the live experience. Little existed online, and until the Speedy Wunderground aided ‘bmbmbm’ release nothing official was on streaming services. All of which meant that each show, each performance felt peculiarly intense, with their math-leaning dalliances soaring into vast, uncharted realms of guitar-aided noise. Signed to Rough Trade, Black Midi have toasted the union by releasing new EP 'Speedway' online. An extremely limited 12 inch drop will be available at shows, with 'Speedway' aligned against remixes from Proc Fiskal, Kwake Bass and Blanck Mass. Alexander Wolfe Searches For True Honesty With 'Avalanche'

Image
"It's about trying to start afresh..." Alexander Wolfe wants to get to the crux of the matter. The songwriter digs deeper than most, tapping into emotions many would rather keep hidden. New album 'Little Death' arrives on March 22nd, and it's his broadest, bravest effort yet. We're able to share new song 'Avalanche', a stark, bruised offering that approaches the topic of "trying to start afresh..." The songwriter explains: “I initially wrote the bones of 'Avalanche' with my friend Starling in a little studio in Hackney a couple of years ago. The instrumental was knocking around for a while and I loved how raw it was and I wanted to match that with really self-effacing, honest lyrics.” “It was written as a stream of consciousness when I was feeling out of control, It's about trying to start afresh, it's like confronting yourself and saying, you're not doing good things, you're not being kind to yo...

Image
Was this year the genre's commercial and creative peak...? In the final years of the 20th century approaching the new millennium R&B had arguably reached its creative and commercial peak. In one corner were the sonic innovators and alchemists of sound like Missy, Timbaland and Aaliyah and in the other were legends like Whitney and Mariah breathing new life into their careers. Add to this the pop pavericks like Macy Gray and Kelis and you have a thrilling period of musical triumphs. 1999 was a year bang in the middle of that golden period and as well as spawning the best song of the decade it was also chock full with hits and amazing deep cuts to savour. - - - - - - Destiny’s Child - Bug A Boo' The first instance of Queen Bey making her first step this is as pristine a banger as you’ll ever hear. - - - Q-Tip - 'Breathe And Stop' Insane production characterised all the best R&B of this period and it doesn't get more insane than Q-Tip in...

Image
With a Valentine's Day special... Lucy Dacus has launched a new holiday-themed song series with a new Valentine's themed drop. The songwriter recently took part in the boygenius project, working alongside Phoebe Bridgers and Julien Baker. Returning to solo duties Lucy Dacus has introduced a new holiday-themed song series, simply titled '2019'. It opens with a Valentine's Day inspired song, with 'La Vie En Rose' finding the American artist updating the Edith Piaf original. Moving between French and English, it seems to rejoice in the inspiration love can provide. Lucy Dacus explains: “From the first time I heard it, I thought ‘La Vie En Rose’ was a perfect song. Hearing it, I knew that, one day, I would fall in love.” “I want someone to listen to this while running at top speed to the doorstep of the person they adore, ready to profess their deep, undying love. (PS, there’s a longer story about singing this song as a duet with my middle sc...

Premiere: HYYTS - 'Bullet'

Image
Soaring pop from the Scottish two-piece... Scottish duo HYYTS push the boundaries of pop to the limit. Across a flurry of singles the group have sketched out a unique alt-pop vision, dazzling with colour and laced with potent melody. New single 'Bullet' is their next statement, a soaring return that once more asks continual questions of how we define synthetic pop. Digital melodies link to potent lyricism, with the single upping the game yet again. The visuals, too, are a real feast of challenging imagery, with director Harry Barber helping HYYTS to make their fetish desires into a reality. Adam says: "We were really interested in it being quite shocking and a little bit scary..."  "We teamed up with filmmaker and director Harry Barber and basically put ourselves into a bunch of sado-masochistic scenarios in a house on the outskirts of London. Harry absolutely nailed bringing the ideas we had to life and really got behind the whole project. Whe...

The Revivalists Picks Out The Sounds Of New Orleans

Image
Deep and dirty funk from the Crescent City... The Revivalists are steeped in the sounds and culture of New Orleans. A port city that has always known how to have a good time, New Orleans has a rich, deep awareness of rhythmic power. The band's new album 'Take Good Care' is out now, a 14 track survey of the past, present, and future of funk-edged New Orleans songwriting. With a London date taking place in just a few days, Clash sat down with The Revivalists to discuss a few songs that get to the core of the Crescent City... - - - Dr. John - 'Qualified' (As picked by Zack Feinberg) This is some high energy Dr. John at the pinnacle of his Dr. John-ness. Rhythmically and lyrically it’s so damn New Orleans, I love it. “Your social life ain’t no better than my hot dog stand!” New Orleans is a fringe city that punches way above its weight class. We hold our unique culture as sacred but without taking it so seriously as to not be fun. - - - Robert P...

Premiere: Sam Way - 'Heroes'

Image
Subtle songwriting that responds to ongoing political upheaval... Sam Way can't help but respond to the world around him. Moving between New York and London, the songwriter has noticed a shift in the political temperature, the rise in fear, and paranoia. Whether it's Trump or Brexit it seems as though insurmountable obstacles are blocking the paths of progress, impinging on the hope art can bring. New single 'Heroes' finds Sam Way sketching a solution to this, injecting some form of positivity into the world. The start of a series of five releases from the songwriter in 2019, 'Heroes' is built around that insistent, infectious chorus. Tune in now. Premiere: Faux Pas - 'TV Made Me Paranoid'

Image
DIY punk from Manchester with a Bojack fascination... Manchester trio Faux Pas can take care of themselves. A resolutely DIY experience, the band stand apart from the hyper-capitalist day-to-day experience of life in 2k19. With a host of headline shows incoming the three-piece have decided to share brand new single 'TV Made Me Paranoid'. A tale of information overload and the relentless grind of digital advertising, Faux Pax take aim at the capitalists constructs that manufacture desire. Singer Ru Cowl comments: “It kinda blew my mind how totally bizarre adverts are, all aiming to get you hard, all hyper produced, selling total crap...” “At the same time I had been watching a show called Bojack and it got me thinking about the brutality of pretty much any entertainment industry. There’s this really killer line in the third episode about how no one will love this has been as she turns 30, my head just started chugging at that thought...” Tune in now. Catch ...

Starter For Five: VAAL

Image
The perfect way to open a DJ set... VAAL has already walked several different paths. As a musician she's been through several iterations, whether that's making synth pop, or moving in an acoustic direction, or her club dalliances. It's this latter appetite that has come to define her work as VAAL, becoming a vital voice in European techno. Continually in demand as a DJ, VAAL has a darkly enticing sound, one rooted in techno but absorbing elements of cold wave, Italo Disco, and more. Introducing more and more of her own productions, VAAL's debut album 'Nosferatu' is a bold, daring offering, the sound of a producer truly striking out on their own. Clash caught up with VAAL to find out how she opens a DJ set in Starter For Five... - - - Jocelyn Pook - 'Masked Ball' (Vaal Edit) (Unreleased) I made an edit of a track from Stanley Kubrick’s Eyes Wide Shut. This piece of music works so well as an opener. It’s a Romanian prayer played in r...

Arlo Parks Shares Remarkable New Single 'Super Sad Generation'

Image
"When I look at my generation I see a kaleidoscope of dejection, passion and anxiety..." Arlo Parks is only 18 years old, not even out of her teens, a mesh of insecurities, anxieties, and bold, bold ambition. Debut single 'Cola' emerged online during the tail end of last year, matching the soulful ache of the vocal to lyricism that veered towards the confessional. Follow up 'Super Sad Generation' is wonderful, a song stems veers from astute, nuanced creative control that also utilises word-play the speaks of youthful emotions spinning out of control. Nodding towards a clear love of hip-hop in the production, the vocal has that faint hint of bruised colour, of already having been through too much. Arlo explains... "When I look at my generation I see a kaleidoscope of dejection, passion and anxiety - there’s this strange mix of sadness and intimacy that saturates Generation Z. 'Super Sad Generation' was inspired by the time my fri...

Track Of The Day 31/1 - Theophilus London x Tame Impala

Image
'Whiplash' These things take time. The outrageous creative spirit that is Theophilus London first linked with Tame Impala's Kevin Parker after a show in 2016, and they quickly hit the studio. Laying down a few ideas, those initial sketches went unreleased, with work continuing on email chains, and the occasional face to face meet up. 'Only You' - a cover of a song by Nigerian musician Steve Monite - was released back in October, with the two now re-uniting for a brand new single. 'Whiplash' has been available online in various forms for a number of years, but it remains as fresh, as daring as when we first heard it. Bathed in synths the chugging beat sits somewhere between psych rock and West Coast hip-hop, while Theophilus London has a barely constrained sense of energy. He brags: “Now they lookin’ like they seen a ghost, when they know it’s my vibe that they need the most...” Given its first play on Zane Lowe's Beats 1 show, the hos...

Listen: Stella Donnelly - 'Lunch'

Image
New album 'Beware Of The Dogs' incoming... Stella Donnelly has shared her tasty, satisfying new single 'Lunch' - tune in now. The songwriter's incoming album 'Beware Of The Dogs' drops on March 8th, with lead single 'Old Man' providing a caustic introduction. 'Lunch' is a succinct melodic thrill, but underneath Stella Donnelly deals with the push-and-pull of life on the road, the endless anxieties of the touring musician. She sings: "You’ve got plots and persuasions and time to explain / But I’ve only got time for lunch / And I get homesick before I go away..." Stella explains: “This is my favourite song on the record. It was a massive team effort the night before I flew away on tour. A song that was only ever meant to be played on a single guitar and sung turned out to be the most intricate and textured piece of music I’ve ever produced. I wrote this about the feeling of displacement I get when I go on tour and co...

Premiere: ESCHES - 'Laguna Limited'

Image
Mellow R&B that draws on a minimalist palette... ESCHES evolved from the imagination of Robert Summerfield, a Vienna based artist whose roots extend across the upper peninsula of Michigan and the greater Chicago area. The multi-talented artist dropped two singles last year, offering stark blasts of mellow R&B that draw from a minimalist palette. Third song 'Laguna Limited' continues his rise, a bold but nonetheless subtle return that deftly expands on his opening salvos. Rooted in ESCHES' gorgeous falsetto, the single seems to continually strive towards some unreachable goal. Romantic songwriting that deals in sweeping gestures, ESCHES' third offering ‘Laguna Limited’ is “a song about momentary utopia and the construction of escape, be it emotional or fictitious.” We've got first play of the video - tune in below. Empress Of, Perfume Genius Link On 'When I'm With Him'

Image
Wow. Empress Of and Perfume Genius link on an incredible new version of 'When I'm With Him'. The original is a gorgeous, love-lorn hymn, a perfect example of the kind of heart-on-sleeve lyricism that makes Perfume Genius so beloved. Empress Of has connected with Mike Hadreas to re-work the song, and it's a divine new interpretation. Switching it up, 'When I'm With Him' is suddenly cast in a spacious new realm, the bold arrangement supplying a foundation for two stellar vocal performances. It's a gripping, nuanced performance, one that allows two dynamic artists to connect in a vivid, natural way. Tune in now. Sports Team Return With 'M5' And It's A Bloody Riot

Image
Watch their stellar new video... Each new video from Sports Team is well worth the wait. The band pour more wit, verve, and imagination into a single music video than most groups do in their entire career, a series of pithy, addictive vignettes of mundane British life. New EP 'Keep Walking!' plummets to ground on March 5th, led by surging new single 'M5'. A tale of motorway madness and lay-by life, 'M5' is an oddly anthem salute to cruise control and leather bucket seats. The video picks up on these references, a pleading, hilarious, and curiously moving document. Singer Alex Rice comments: "We want to get into the minutiae of everyday life, valorise it, romanticise it, play with it. If England seems prosaic then people should be able to find something uplifting in that..." Tune in now. The Leisure Society Introduce New Double LP 'Arrivals & Departures'

Image
Lead song 'God Has Taken A Vacation' is online now... The Leisure Society have introduced their bold new double album 'Arrivals & Departures'. The record lands on April 12th, and comes almost exactly 10 years after the release of the band's debut single. Yet the process behind the LP wasn't exactly easy. Lead songwriter Nick Hemmings and flautist Helen Whitaker separated, and during this lengthy process Nick moved out of their Brighton home. As a result, the record has many different homes. 'Arrivals & Departures' was recorded in rented homes across the Peak District, the Cotswolds, and even a medieval mansion in Richelieu, France. Eager to record string and choral sections for the record, The Leisure Society even snuck into London's Union Chapel for some late night sessions - with guest voices including Brian Eno and the poet Liz Berry. New song 'God Has Taken A Vacation' is online now, with Nick commenting: ...

Eyesore & The Jinx Share Excellent New Single 'On An Island'

Image
Taut, caustic, and creative, it tackles "the cultural residue of post-Brexit Britain..." Mersey bandits Eyesore & The Jinx have shared their excellent new single 'On An Island'. The band launched their debut single 'Gated Community' last year, a caustic slab of guitar noize that seemed to thrive on unbridled possibility. Follow up 'On An Island' is a restrained piece of minimalist distortion, moving between taut spoken word segments and thundering one chord bedlam. Produced by Jonathan Hartley from dearly loved Liverpool group Clinic, it rides along on a bass-line spasm, just waiting for the signal to descend into a fit of barbed wire guitar. Eyesore & The Jinx describe the single as "a sweet and tender ballad dedicated to the cultural residue of post-Brexit Britain. Where endorsers of teeth whitener, protein shakes and 2-for-1 cocktails are as influential as the reptiles in Westminster..."  Tune in now. Join us o...
